To: nntpcache-users@suburbia.net Subject: active file confusion Since I've posted this message to this list before but didn't receive any replies, I figured I'd try again. ------------------------------- I'm seeing some strange behaviour with nntpcache 2.3.2.1 and Netscape Collabra. When I subscribe to a new newsgroup, the list of newsgroups window shows around 400 articles unread. However when I go to that newsgroup, it tries to download around 770 article headers, *displays* all 770 article headers, but still says around 400 articles unread. I try to view many of the articles (I assume around 370 of them) I get the following error: newsgroup server responded: Bad article number Perhaps the article has expired I performed a few tests: % telnet nntpcache-server 119 Trying <ip address>... Connected to nntpcache-server.domain.com Escape character is '^]'. 200 nntpcache-server.domain.com NNTPcache server V2.3.2.1 [see www.nntpcache.org] (c) 1996-1998 Julian Assange <proff@iq.org> Mar 24 1998 ready (posting ok). group nj.forsale 211 404 83267 83719 nj.forsale list active nj.forsale 215 nj.forsale 83719 82893 y . % telnet newsfeed-server 119 Trying <ip address>... It seems that the active file data (I assume is stored in memory) is out of date. What is the best way to keep this data up to date? I have the following settings in the nntpcache.servers file: # host:port Interface Active Act.tim Newsgrp Group Xover Arts newsfeed-server.domain.com. DEFAULT 30m 24h 24h 30m 60d 60d Short of completely restarting the nntpcache daemon, I can't seem to get the active file data to be updated. I've tried the following: o Sending SIGUSR2 signal to expire as of 2 days. o Running this perl script supplied by a nntpcache user: #!/usr/local/bin/perl5 # # Just "pings" the NNTPCache server to reset it's active lists use Net::NNTP; $nntp = Net::NNTP->new() or die "Can not connect to news server"; $nntp->quit; o Sending SIGUSR1 signal to force currency check. Is there an appropriate method for updating the active file data? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me if there are any further questions via INTERNET mail at jsv@bms.com.
