I was under the impression that the kernel will give you a fatal
message about not being able to find the root filesystem in that case.
Not sure, why is this happening. For fedora, it says system going to sleep, which is strange.
There are similar questions in ubuntu community
googling "ALERT! /dev/sda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell" will show the result.
