Hmmm, strange, IMO please check these things:
1. are you using vanilla kernel e.g the one from kernel.org?

2. what are the content of the first five lines of the main Makefile
(one you found in main directory of kernel source)?

3. are you incorporating config file from the 2.6.24-16?

So far, I never such case like you do....
