I wonder if my problem is related(see my post on my eee PC which
freezes on shutdown)

This was immediately after emerging alsa-utils and configuring the
sound card according to the gentoo doc, alsa-guide.xml. Apparently my
hardware also uses snd_hda_codec_realtek.

BTW there is no 'alsa-info' on my system.
