LXR was already mentioned. Also, have a look at 'make cscope' and your
$EDITORs capabilities with cscope-output. (Warning: cscope files are
huge, like 1GB for me at the moment. Generating them takes time, but it
pays off, I think).

For a start, I'd definately go for Linus'-tree. You may encounter things
in distribution kernels which are uncommon in the vanilla kernel, what
can be confusing. If your aim already is modification of the F9-kernel,
then you could also modify this one applying learning-by-doing.
