There is nothing wrong with your kernel or otherwise you wouldn't have
been able to boot it manually. There is apparently something wrong with
your grub setup (/boot/grub/menu.lst). Here is what I use for a system
with only SATA disks:

title           Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.26-rc6
root            (hd0,6)
kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-rc6 root=/dev/sda7 ro vga=792
savedefault
