"which one exactely?" is exactly the question...

Hmm, I know for a fact that

$ ld -v
GNU ld (Linux/GNU Binutils) 2.17.50.0.17.20070615

which is in Slackware Linux 12.0 and the previous one that was in
Slackware 11.0 (binutils 2.15.92.0.2), both generate working kernels,
but beyond that I can't offer anything useful.

I guess we should find out what's actually required so it can be
properly documented or else that's something that is likely to bite
users :-(
