IIRC, you need to tell oprofile that you are going to use 2.4.x kernel. 
Check "./configure --help" output of oprofile and see if you can find 
one.

Another thing is, since oprofile is not included by default on 2.4.x 
kernel, maybe you need to download a kernel patch to create the driver 
interface for your 2.4.x kernel. Check on OProfile web site for this 
patch
