Re: to modprobe from defconfig

I find Google sends to me ever more newbies guessing wrongly
that depmod version 2.4.25 etc. exceeds the modutils 0.9.10 required by Documentation/Changes. Therefore here I now mention:

Lately I saw module-init-tools-3.0.tar.gz support build and install of both lk 2.6 and 2.4 in Fedora with no more modutils install work than:

./configure --prefix=/
make
./depmod -V

sudo make moveold
sudo make install

That experience may restore to truth the myth of this being easy, provided you remember never to repeat the install procedure, and to choose --prefix=/ only if you do mean to install over /sbin.

P.S.

Key secrets may include:

a) The FAQ for to 2.6 from 2.4 appears intermittently in places like:

http://www.codemonkey.org.uk/post-halloween-2.5.txt

b) That FAQ tells us some mkinitrd don't find .ko in /lib/modules

c) make of newer 2.6 kernels complains of the wrong modutils.

d) Workarounds exist for grub boot failing when root=LABEL=/.

e) ./configure often exists.
