Offline kindly I received the 2.5.69 hint to add a
seemingly redundant `make modules`:

make mrproper
make defconfig
make
make modules
make modules_install
make install

No joy. Same death in `make install` as before:

Kernel: arch/i386/boot/bzImage is ready
sh arch/i386/boot/install.sh 2.5.69try
arch/i386/boot/bzImage System.map ""
No module aic7xxx found for kernel 2.5.69try mkinitrd
failed

make[1]: *** [install] Error 1
make: *** [install] Error 2

Offline kindly I heard more when I quoted this error
more fully, as I have here now.

I'm not yet clear if (1) in Linux culture no real
programmer follows the `make help` hint to try `make
install`, (2) if `make install` actually has a bug
here, (3) or if indeed I am misusing `make install`.

I figure I may try 2.5.68 and the new 2.5.70 for
comparison.
