Just for information - Jan's statement "kernel never read files" is not 
true, IMHO. It should better read "kernel should avoid reading files on 
fs as much as possible".

For example: drivers/sound/maui.c::init_maui() & others, calling 
mod_firmware_load()

And I've seen many third-party patches, which perform reading files quite 
often (for example LIDS intrusion detection system).
