It sounds like SMTP to me - there's no such thing as an SMTP proxy, because that is what an SMTP server is. Perhaps this is the ideal answer to the original question :) ?



Functionally sticking an IRC server on the perimeter works, but then you have the work of securing and maintaining an IRC server which is no small task. Maybe SBlaze knows more about the proxy he mentioned and how it works. If your letting IRC (bots!) into your LAN you've got your hands full.
