You can switch from libungif to libgif.
There are no patent issues arround gif anymore.
The patent ended in 2004.
The full gif/lzw are now in the public domain.
There is no need to use the libungif anymore.

Though the difference between libgif and libungif is only for writing gif 
files. If ming only use it for reading, there shouldn't be any difference.

But maybe at the end the libungif should disappear.
