It might be your own ISP blocking SMTP port 25 to prevent spamming. Some provide another port for those who wish to send email while off net. Mine uses 587.

Not in this case, fortunately. Both port 25 and 587 work (with authentication) on my hired server, and I use them daily from those connections which let me.
