Actually it'll download all the headers but will only show 250 by default. The first fetch of messages will take some time if you have a lot but after that the list will be shown much faster because the UI only will have to sort and filter 250 messages instead of thousands. Obviously the next step is to download only the required headers but that implies several risky changes in tinymail.
