The problem is that the plugins run in the desktop process, and thus if some plugin causes a segmentation fault, it takes down the whole desktop. Old desktop versions caused a reboot when they crashed, but from hildon-desktop 1:0.0.38-1 onwards there is so-called safe mode that allows the desktop to be restarted with the default set of plugins. We could maybe run some of the plugins in a separate process in the future. That would prevent the desktop from crashing and would aid in identifying and fixing the broken plugin.
