Yes, it is necessary for you to install all the applications again.
Updating your OS by flashing a new firmware image is like erasing your
harddrive and installing a new operating system.

We want to improve this in the future in two ways: we hope to be able
to deliver some system software updates without the need to erase and
reinstall your device; and the Application Manager will include the
catalogues and the names of the applications you have installed in the
backup.  When you restore such a backup, the Application Manager will
itself try to find and reinstall your applications, saving you the
effort to remember the list of applications yourself.
