I had the same problem, but i noticed it only after restoring backup and installing xterm; was the same for you? Anyway, i fixed this reverting to swapping /var/lib/dpkg/status with /var/lib/dpkg/status-old I found happily. Of course you have to be root for doing this. May be there is a simpler way for recovering. bye, Roberto
