[maemo-users] Video encoding

Hello all,

What are the best settings for encoding video to view on Nokia 770
considering performance and quality limitations?

On http://maemo.org/maemowiki/VideoEncoding suggested resolutions are
240x144, 352x208 and the others. Also there is information that the
device supports hardware pixels doubling for video decoding purposes:
http://maemo.org/maemowiki/GameDevelopment

So my guess is that actually screen resolution is 400x240 for video
decoding. Considering all that, would not 320x240 (4:3) be an optimal
resolution for video as it would not need any scaling performed by CPU?
All that is left is to select proper bitrate to avoid frames skipping.
By the way, is it possible to get information if there are any frames
skipped when playing video?

Also 208x160 seems a good resolution too if there is something like
hardware pixels tripling supported as well. And even if it is not
accelerated, it should at least not degrade quality when scaled (x3
scaling can be probably performed with no quality loss at all).

Am I right/wrong? Any comments?

PS. I'm a complete newbee at encoding video, everything that is written
here might be completely wrong, so don't beat me too hard please :)
