Alan, Thank you for an attempt. :) Interesting findings. Opened Virtual Machine Settings. In hardware, I have chosen USB controller. There are four options there: Enable high-speed support for USB 2.0 devices Automatically connect new USB devices Show all USB input devices Share a Bluetooth devices with virtual machine I marked all 4 of these options. Guess what?! Now the plug-in works! Bad electrical connection, bad hardware, ... If you want to get more information, enable CONFIG_USB_DEBUG for the host's kernel and see what shows up in the dmesg log when you plug in the g_zero gadget.
