Thanks Greg and Alan. Ok, so I rebooted the same kernel (just to be on the safer side), which IMO was recent enough. And this modem started working, with no nvidia driver loaded. This is just fine, as I do not run X on this box. But, this raises another question, I am connecting the other USB modem (the first one) to the same USB port, and it does not work (and both the USB modem work on two other laptops). So, I am a bit sceptical about this being a hardware issue. Now since the second modem has started working, to focus back on the first (erring) modem. Here are some details: dmesg output is as follows: [ 1697.766534] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device number 68 using ohci_hcd [ 1702.758068] scsi42 : usb-storage 3-2:1.0 [ 1702.943199] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1703.169870] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1703.179875] usb 3-2: USB disconnect, device number 68 [ 1703.713196] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1703.939872] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1704.229860] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device number 69 using ohci_hcd [ 1704.619863] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1704.846533] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1705.043197] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1705.269868] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1705.466527] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1705.693197] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1705.889859] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1706.116535] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1706.313194] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1706.539866] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1706.736527] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1706.963201] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1707.159862] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1707.386538] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1707.583193] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1707.809862] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1708.006575] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1708.236534] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 1708.246536] usb 3-2: USB disconnect, device number 69 This connecting and disconnecting continues as long as device is plugged in.
