There may be several issues involved here. The ftdi_driver was broken
due to changes in the tty layer from 2.6.31 to 2.6.31.5. Have you tried
2.6.31.14 (the latest stable 31 release)?

If that works you could either try reverting commit
6a1a82df91fa0eb1cc76069a9efe5714d087eccd (USB: ftdi_sio: fix DTR/RTS
line modes) or verify that 2.6.34 (not 2.6.34.x), which does not include
this patch, works.
