There are a few differences between 2.6.31.5 and what's on the master
branch of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/sarah/xhci.git.
In particular, USB hubs will not work under 2.6.31.5.  You'll need to
update to 2.6.32-rc1 at least to get that functionality.  But I'm
interested in your failure under 2.6.31.5, because mass storage devices
under xHCI should work under that kernel.
