OK, but the point remains that it came along *after* the patch
had entered my processing queue.

As with Greg's or Linus' queue, at that point it's easiest all
around if you send a small delta patch instead of a replacement.
Replacement patches, as you have noticed, get lost easier.  They
take more work than something *obviously* a new patch, even if
the new patch can later get folded in.
