Ah, I see. Maybe we should just use those terms, then :)

About the booting issue, I double-checked the logs of what happens
when the device is plugged in with a USB2 cable into a USB3 port, and
yes, there is nothing unusal save for a single dmesg line that stands
out:

  xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: device LPM test failed, may disconnect and re-enumerate

But it can be seen and mounts fine.

I'll check usbmon a bit later.
