shouldn't just the command speakup launch speakup?
I can't get it to run.

NO Glen, you first run a
ps -A
Look over the list for speech-dispatcher and espeak as well as other
speech-dispatcher related items. Write down or remember those process 
number.
Then type
sudo kill -9 followed by those numbers.
The minus 9 is a switch. Good luck
