As far as I was told by sighted person pressing letter s put you on 32-bit version of Debian installer assuming that you downloaded multi-architecture iso image from Debian's website that's why you need to press the down arrow one more time to position yourself on 64-bit release. Does the live DVD also have Speakup? My impression from the installation guide is that it does, but, as noted before, I could get neither Speakup nor Orca talking.
