Hello. I'm using Fedora 20 with speech. I'm thinking of switching distros, and Debian's one I'm considering. Yes, not getting speech seems strange. I had the same trouble a few months ago. On my old machine, I did get Speakup when doing the right thing at the prompt. I do get Speakup when booting up the Arch CD. This is rather strange that your Debian 7.X net installation doesn't kick in after pressing the letter S and enter unless your sound card is not recognized. You need to wait for a beep sound to press letter s though. Second, I tried this week to use both the Debian live CD (7.2, I think) and the 32-64-bit install CD, 7.3 if I remember right. (The usual amixer command that I use to raise the volume did nothing.)
