And I'm back. The first thing I notice is that "volume control" is now called sound, and it has all the options I expected. There seems to be an improvement in speech-dispatcher's responsiveness and overall performance over Ubuntu's implementation as well. So far, I'm impressed. There are a few issues with what seems to be a very fast dropout of the speech during very short letters, but it's not a showstopper for me. Perhaps there's another setting somewhere I need to tweak. Interestingly, I only started noticing this blip after I installed pulseaudio-gnome, which pulled in alsa-plugins and pulseaudio-alsa. ~Kyle
