The vanishing PC speaker

Have you checked whether the speaker is deactivated in the CMOS?

If you have alsamixer or aumix, you can check there to make sure that the 
PC speaker is activated.

You've obviously tried the modprobe method, but what happens when you do 
that?

My laptop emulates the PC speaker through the sound card.  I did not have 
to configure this--it just worked when I modprobed pcspkr.
