I ended up having to use a sarge debian speakup disk to do it. I went from lenny to sid and what was really interesting for this computer is what had to be done for kernel selection. Before it was possible to get away with speakup-i686 and speakup-i486 and amd64 for this k7 machine. When I tried amd64, the machine wouldn't boot because udev had 408 selected and that was unimplemented so it went into the eternal loop. When I went with k7 though the install worked. The sound card is working though alsaconf was removed and one ethernet card works. The desktop environment either isn't taking my credentials or timing out too fast so I can't get them entered but other than that everything else appears to work.
