Having done some reading over on debian-user I found out what's happening here is bug 444003 and debian has that up on the serious level. It's being worked. The file /etc/X11/xorg.conf is an empty file the only thing dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg can do is back it up and make more empty files. I can delete it though. How to get X set up and operational without it I don't yet know. Suggestions much appreciated.
