sound device questions

Hi,

My sound is really quiet on my debian box.
I only get sound through the front headphone jack.
I set "PCM" and "master volume" to 100%
But it is still not easy to hear.
So does anyone know how to
1. Direct the sound to the back jack.
And 2. Turn the volume up more? Are there more controls in linux?

Finally if I play music my TTS stops working.
Why is this? How can I have more than one form of audio coming through
the sound device?
Like for example espeak and music? I get sound device is busy if other
sounds are playing...

BTW I am using the speakup modified kernel 2.6.18-4.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do?
Thanks,
