I recently updated the debian init script I wrote to start software speech at boot if a hardware synth is not configured. ie. It supposedly checks if speakup is speaking through a hardware synth and if not, starts software speech. See: http://www.math.wisc.edu/~jheim/stuff/softsynth.html Instead of requiring 2 scripts, it's just one.
