Ubuntu Live CD and Sound

Well, what's strange here is out of 3 or four restarts, it actually
worked once.  Yes, I do have an on-board sound card but I'm pretty
sure that is disabled from the BIOS.  It always comes up as the
primary and only sound card in my normal slackware setup.  I'll have
to see if I can mess with volume stuff from a console but without
speech, it's really hard to really know what is going on.  I just find
it strange that it will work once in a while.  When I don't have any
speech, I also don't have any start-up sounds either.  It goes through
all the boot sequence and visually the desktop appears.
