Well you can use gnome. Ubuntu is a distrobution of linux... I find alpine very accessible and if I was you I would go with alpine. Its command line. First set up fetchmail. Google perhaps for "setting up fetchmail" and copy a sample .fetchmailrc file. Replacing the information like username, password and email address as well as servers with the correct information. Also best to make it run as a daemon. Then set up the sending part in alpine... Probably best to do all your email work in a user account with the same user name for your email address.
