Jonathan,

I switched my portaudio package in Debian from portaudio18 to
portaudio19, and got myself into a pack of trouble doing so. That's
what pulled jack in, and a bunch of other things decided to depend on
jack as well, including lots of components of openoffice.org. I finally
held my breath and purged jack, plus all the things that depended on
it, and then put portaudio18 back again. Reinstalling openoffice.org
then worked without needing jack. Very strange, but I am now back to
the Debian packages for espeak and speech-dispatcher (1.26 and 6.2) and
all is well again. I guess I just better stay away from the bleeding
edge. <smile>

Chuck
