If you use the grml live-cd just enter speakup's kernel cheatcodes at the bootprompt: grml speakup_synth=dectlk This should activate the speakup kernel module for the dectalk synth. BTW: If you do not have a hardware synthesizer you can try booting with the new swspeak option: grml swspeak This prepares the system for use with software synthesizer through speakup. Just run 'speechd-up' after booting up to activate sound output then.
