Interresting, with the /proc/speakup/silent file you're supposed to be able to shut-up speakup but it appears to be pooched. I'll try to look at that over the next few days. You could also echo non >/proc/speakup/synth_name in a users .bash_profile and turn it back on >in .bash_login. On the other hand hitting the print screen key to >turn off speakup in a console isn't exactly a big burden for someone.
