You want to add speakup_synth=bns to your append line in /etc/lilo.conf, type lilo, and reboot, and away you go. If you have no way of doing this, then when you get to the lilo prompt, which you should get to by default if you haven't messed with your lilo.conf after the install, type: linux speakup_synth=bns , and you'll get the same result as above, which will now allow you to modify your lilo.conf while you have speech.
