memory /swap question: possibly also tmpfs question

So how do I use tmpfs? I had it configured in the kernel and it mounted,
but df showed it always at 0 pernent. this still seems strange to me too,
because linux never used to use every scrap of my memory like this. That's
why you can usually run linux with fairly low memory as compared to
windows for instance.
at any rate, what else do i have to do to make tmpfs work?
