Speechd-up Issues

I am using alsa and kernel 2.4.26 with everything compiled as
modules, and my stuff loads fine in scripts. I use a one second
pause after loading speech-dispatcher, and that helps speechd_up
get started okay. Put a "sleep 1" in the middle of your statement
sequence somewhere and try it again. It is not a kernel issue nor
a sound driver issue.
