Yes, that's just exactly what happens to me also. I can load the softsynth module and speechd_up (Debian already has speech-dispatcher running) as long as I do it from the command line. As soon as I put them in a script, however, be it one run during bootup or one I run after logging in, speechd_up gives me the same error and fails to work.
