I ask this because one of my machines loads beautifully every time and that laptop has OSS drivers and kernel version 2.4.26. My original machine with the problem runs 2.4.25. I can't imagine ALSA vs OSS having any relivance here because speech-dispatcher and flite work fine in all cases.
