This is a tough question to answer because I am not really that familiar with gentoo. I believe they have two distributions an online and a cd. I would recommend the 1.5 tarball for the cd version and cvs for the online. The difficulty with this approach is cvs is not always stable. It is most of the time but from time to time I break it when I want to check in stuff I'm working on so either I don't lose it or I want to work on it in different places. For instance cvs is once again becoming stable but there are still a few outstanding bugs.
