okay so here was the deal i did the horrid process of going through config i still had problems so then i looked a lot closer at the error messages i got from the make modules process. i turns out that apparently pcmcia and wan stuff is broken in 2.4.20 so after i disabled pcmcia, wan and wireless just for the hell of it, it finally compiled properly so i installed the kernel i get through boot and the synth starts to talk and it says the following. kernel panic: VFS unable to mount r: oot FS on 03:01 any ideas?
