Just to be clear, Glen, the Red Hat installer will write data to /, and to /boot, whether or not these are two separate partitions won't really matter. But, it will write much, much more data ot /usr. That's the only big mistake in the scheme you posted originally. Swap thos two around, what you initially called /root but is really /, and /usr. /usr needs to be relatively big, and / can be relatively small.
