One thing I discovered recently was that whether speakup can make a serial device work easily may depend on settings in the bios setup... If you persist in havi;ng trouble which cannot be solved with the "speakup_ser=x" option, try this: Prepare a bootable DOS disk. Boot your system to a DOS prompt. Never mind putting speech on; it... Then replace the DOS disk with your Linux/Speakup boot disk and press "ctrl-alt-delete" to start the Linux bootup. Do not use the reset button if any - use the three finger salute! That way DOS will have a chance to initialize your serial ports and the parameters will be preserved through the soft boot... Chuck.
