I have previously been using the alsa drivers with other sound cards, but am now upgrading my system with new hardware and current releases of the stuff I have been using, and the transition is somewhat of a challenge. Besides the basic drivers for a lot of popular sound cards, the alsa package includes utilities to play, record, and do mixer functions. Chuck.
