The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) is a set of sound drivers for Linux that has some advantages over the standard sound drivers that are included with Linux. Two advantages that come to mind are that it has better support for some sound cards (such as my ESS Solo-1), and it has better support for full-duplex mode (which is especially handy in voice chat programs like Speak Freely).
