The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) is a set of sound drivers for
Linux that has some advantages over the standard sound drivers that are
included with Linux.  Two advantages that come to mind are that it has
better support for some sound cards (such as my ESS Solo-1), and it has
better support for full-duplex mode (which is especially handy in voice
chat programs like Speak Freely).  You can find out more at:
